Committee to compare N.B. council salaries with other municipalities

Oct 26, 2018 | 11:35 AM

Members of the administration from the City of North Battleford will be checking in with other similar-sized municipalities in the province to compare how it pays its council members.

City Manager Randy Patrick proposed the review of indemnities for the council and mayor positions. Council approved the resolution at its recent meeting.

He raised the issue that the existing policy pertaining to council salaries is dated and actually isn’t being used. The policy indicates that council’s salary is based on a percentage of the city manager’s salary. Patrick said this policy also doesn’t make much sense as it can be quite arbitrary.

As a result, he suggested an outside committee compare the salaries of councils in similar-sized municipalities so they could give their feedback to North Battleford council, in time for the 2019 budget deliberations. Administration will first collect the information from the other appropriate municipalities.

“We want to have a lot of public input into it, so council can get some good recommendations about what that policy should say,” Patrick said.

Three members of the public and two former councillors will make up the five-person committee which will return its report around late December.

Patrick said the report will also outline what exactly councillors’ responsibilities are, to be fully transparent and keep citizens informed.

“We wanted to change that [dated] policy and make it current, make it up to date and make it reasonable,” Patrick told reporters following the meeting.

Mayor Ryan Bater also supported the proposal.

“It’s a matter of bringing it into the community, for the citizens of North Battleford,” he said.
