BMF Peewee Bucks to play in KFL final

Oct 31, 2017 | 12:00 PM

Practicing in harsh weather paid off for the Battlefords Minor Football (BMF) peewee Bucks this past weekend.

On Sunday afternoon, they found themselves playing in the Kinsmen Football League semifinals in Saskatoon against the Ledingham Steelers.

The Bucks battled through cold, windy, and at times blistering conditions to defeat the Steelers 24-12 and advance to this weekend’s final.

“The snow wasn’t really snow I guess. It was more like ice pellets. So in your face kind of grind it out business,” peewee Bucks head coach Paul Fransoo said. “The group of coaches that have been doing this, we coach them up hard. We go out and we practice in this kind of weather. We make sure that they understand how different the game can become when it’s cold and you can’t feel your fingers very well. It’s about getting tough before you need to be tough.

“The coaches as a group felt that the kids really played well. Right now we’re probably playing the best football we have all year, which is exactly where you want to be at this time of year.”

Fransoo said there were a couple things the team did well that made the difference in Sunday’s playoff win.

“Blocking and converting those majors for the two-point kick made a huge difference for us,” he said. “In this league, converting your major score on a kick is worth two points because kicking is difficult for these little guys…[so] that was a big thing. There’s six points right there. The other thing is we blocked very, very well in that game…We controlled the clock because of that.”

The win means the Bucks get to play in the championship bowl at Saskatoon Minor Football Field this coming Sunday afternoon.

Making it to the final is a big deal for BMF, as it is bound to have a positive effect on the entire Battlefords community.

“For the program, when we talked about putting it on the map, this is like a bingo dabber, not a little black dot anymore,” Fransoo said. “The Battlefords in general benefits from a team this size and this age getting to this level through the adversity of things and weather and all of it. They’re going to be solid players coming out of here for sure.”

Fransoo credits the large coaching staff he works with for many of the positives that have come out of the season.

Without them, the team’s success probably wouldn’t be possible.

“We’re all volunteer,” he said. “Nobody is getting paid for any of this. We do it just for the love of the game. And it’s really paid off this year.”

The peewee Bucks will take on the second-seeded Tinkler Raiders in Sunday’s final, who finished with a 6-2 regular seasonr record.

The Bucks, meanwhile, finished in first with a 7-1 regular season record.

“They’re pretty excited I think, but at the same time they’ve managed to stay focused,” Fransoo said. “[SMF Field] will be an experience just in itself…The vast majority of them have not touched that field and many of them probably haven’t been there even to see it. It’ll be a special event.

“I think they’re going to have a really good time. There were a lot of smiles in the room afterwards and ‘alright, now it’s onto the next one’ kind of deal.”

The weather is also not going to get any easier from here on out, which the coaching staff and players both know.

“Fighting the weather is going to be part of finishing the season,” Fransoo said. “We just need to be prepared. That’s dressing properly and staying warm on the sidelines so that if you’re called on, you’re ready to go.”
