AAA Sharks drop season opening games on road

Oct 2, 2017 | 5:00 PM

It was a tough opening weekend for the Battlefords AAA Sharks, as they dropped back to back games to the Melville Prairie Fire on the road by scores of 9-2 and 4-1.

The Sharks scored first in Saturday’s 9-2 loss, but allowed three power play goals and were outshot 32-21.

Fifteen-year-old Sharks sisters Brooklyn and Sydney Rowley each had two points in the game, while veteran forwards Ali Aitken and Maya Tupper each recorded a point.

Chloe Burt made 23 saves in the loss.

On Sunday, it was the power play that struggled, going 1-for-9.

A slow start also made the difference, as the Prairie Fire notched three goals in the game’s opening nine minutes.

Tupper made it a 3-1 game in the second but Melville responded two minutes later to make it 4-1 after 40 minutes. The Sharks couldn’t get a comeback going in the third, as they fired just seven shots on goal.

Haylie Biever made 26 saves for the Sharks in Sunday’s matinee.

The Sharks will travel to Prince Albert next weekend for back-to-back games againt the defending champion Northern Bears, who have yet to play a game this season.

Those games are set for Saturday, Oct. 7 at 2 p.m. and Sunday, Oct. 8 at 1:30 p.m.
