AAA Stars season preview: goal scoring can’t dry up

Sep 27, 2017 | 8:00 AM

The AAA Stars scored 13 goals and notched two wins in their first two pre-season games. But then scored just one in their final two, surprisingly winning one of those.

Although pre-season results are often not a good predictive measure of how the regular season might go league-wide, it does help a team trying to assess its own strengths and weaknesses.

“Right now our biggest issue is we’ve got to score,” AAA Stars head coach Norm Johnston said after practice on Tuesday, just three days ahead of the club’s regular season opener on Friday. “With [Adam] Beckman not coming back right now, we’ve got to score. Somebody’s got to score.”

Beckman was the team’s leading scorer last season as a 15-year-old rookie, and is still with the Spokane Chiefs right now. He may be for a while, considering Kailor Yamamoto is still with the Edmonton Oilers and Jaret Anderson-Dolan just signed an entry-level contract with the Los Angeles Kings. With those two Chiefs not back yet, and another forward hurt, Spokane has room for Beckman to stick for a bit. Plus, he’s impressed the Chiefs’ brass so far.

What it means is the AAA Stars are preparing to play the season without him and that means other forwards are going to have to step up like they did in the team’s 5-2 and 8-2 pre-season wins.

Ty Mosimann is a new addition from the Prince Albert Mintos who will feature largely in the offence this season, as will linemate Damon McKenzie, who played midget AA with Unity last season. Matt Allardyce, a former Swift Current Legionnaire, and second-year Stars Ian Hillis and Dylan Esau will also be called upon.

“We don’t have a top scorer right now until [Ty] Mosimann and [Damon] MacKenzie start scoring,” Johnston said. “And then the rest of the kids like [Ian] Hillis and [Dylan] Esau, all those guys have got to start scoring.”

Johnston said he has been very pleased with the team’s work ethic so far. In fact, he said it has been the biggest postive so far.

“We compete,” Johnston said. “That’s one thing we do. We compete. We work hard. And they listen.”

The defensive side of things is a work in progress. But that’s to be expected in midget AAA hockey. And the team has two solid young goaltenders in Joseph Young and Carter Serhyenko.

Johnston said he does not have a clue were the team stacks up amongst other teams, but it also doesn’t matter right now.

“I just know that we have to be prepared every night, every game,” he said. “Biggest thing is you’ve got to make the playoffs.

“The league is tough, it’s competitive. And a lot of guys lost a lot of scoring and I don’t know where we’re going to end up.”

When asked if there is one key for the team this season, Johnston was momentarily stumped. After a pause he smiled and said, “We just have to score one more goal than the other guy.”

The Stars begin the season on the road this weekend at the Warman showcase when they play the Notre Dame Hounds Friday and the Notre Dame Argos on Saturday. Next weekend they head to Swift Current for two games before playing their home opener at the Civic Centre on Tuesday, Oct. 10 against the Saskatoon Contacts.
