SPHL playoff schedule released

Feb 7, 2017 | 11:00 AM

The Meota Combines enter the Saskatchewan Prairie Hockey League playoffs as the hottest team, but they won’t have home ice for the first round of the playoffs.

On Monday, the SPHL released its first round playoff schedule, with Meota, winners of six straight, finishing as the fifth seed. That sets up a matchup between the Combines and the Shellbrook Silvertips.

Game one goes Friday night at 8:30 p.m. in Shellbrook, with game two on Sunday Feb. 12 at 7:30 p.m. at the Civic Centre. Game three will be played on Feb. 15, game four on Feb. 17 and game five is to be determined.

Both teams finished with an identical 12-6 record. They also split the season series, with Shellbrook winning 10-4 on Nov. 18 and Meota winning 3-2 last week.

The Battleford Beaver Blues, meanwhile, finished two points ahead of the Combines with a 13-5 record. As the third seed, they are pitted against the Glaslyn North Stars in round one. Glaslyn finished with an 8-9-0-1 record.

Game one in the three vs. six matchup is set for Thursday Feb. 9 at Battleford Arena at 7:30 p.m. Game two is Friday in Glaslyn at 8 p.m., while games three, four and five are scheduled for February 16, 18 and 19, respectively.

The Beaver Blues, who finished the year with five straight wins, went 2-0 against Glaslyn this season. They won 8-5 on Dec. 10 and 8-4 on Jan. 6.

Battleford’s top line of Cody Danberg, Mike George, and Brent Salzl finished second, third and fourth in league scoring in the regular season. Danberg had 54 points in 17 games, Salzl had 51 points in 17 games, and George 47 points in just 13 games.

The other matchups see the top-ranked Hafford Hawks taking on the eighth-seeded Cut Knife Colts and the Edam Three Stars facing off against the Maymont Settlers.

Hafford’s series begins Wednesday at home, while game one in the Edam-Maymont series kicks off Thursday in Edam.

The Three Stars are led by leading scorer Mitch Wall, who had 43 goals and 71 points this season in just 17 games. He won the Most Valuable Forward award last season after putting up 50 points in 17 games.
