New electronics recycling centre opens in Cut Knife

Nov 18, 2016 | 6:36 AM

Residents of Cut Knife and the surrounding area have a new option to dispose of electronics.

The Electronic Products Recycling Association of Saskatchewan announced Thursday, Nov. 17 the Cut Knife landfill is now an authorized drop-off centre for end-of-life electronics.

“It’s one way to help the community divert electronics out of the landfill and out of the environment,” EPRA program director Gayleen Creelman said.

An environmental benefit of recycling electronics is being able to reuse the materials, rather than leaving them to sit in a landfill. Creelman said they are able to recycle roughly 90 per cent of the metals, plastics, glass and other earth elements, so those products return into the manufacturing supply chain rather than taken from the environment.

Creelman said she’s hoping there will be buzz in the community and people will start using the facility right away.

“We’re hoping that the community will embrace it. The council, Mayor Gwenn Kaye have been a strong advocate of getting this up and running for the community, the residents of Cut Knife and the R.M., so we’re looking forward to it,” she said. “It’ll be a slow start but we have to start somewhere.”

Residents across Saskatchewan can find their closest drop-off centre on the EPRA website.
