City enters into fire protection agreement with new Resort Village of Turtle View

Sep 10, 2019 | 5:00 PM

The City of Meadow Lake has entered into an agreement to provide fire protection services to the new Resort Village of Turtle View.

The move dates back to Sept. 10, 2018, when members of the Committee to Establish the East Side Resort Village of Turtle Lake appeared before lawmakers with a request for fire protection should their endeavour be successful.

At the time, according to agenda documents, council members encouraged the committee to continue talks with the fire chief and administration. They did not commit to anything as the resort village did not exist as a legal entity.

In November, an agreement was mailed out for comment after council settled on the terms in October.

This spring, the city was advised that the Resort Village received approval for incorporation, which will become official on Jan. 1, 2020. Elections were held in early August and the newly elected council remained interested in pursuing the agreement. Meadow Lake’s fire chief met with the representatives of the new Resort Village on Sept. 5.

The chief recommended lawmakers vote to enter into the agreement, subject to conditions he laid out in a report.

The city will receive about $10,000 from the agreement each year until the end of 2021. This dollar amount is based on the number of properties the department will cover.

“It is always of benefit for us to be able to expand the services that we provide,” City Manager Jessica Walters said.

The fire chief plans to work with representatives from the resort village to build up their capacity in case of a fire to have the most effective response possible.

Meadow Lake provides fire protection services to the R.M. of Meadow Lake, Flying Dust First Nation, Meadow Lake Provincial Park, the Village of Dorintosh, the Resort Village of Greig Lake, and Eagles Lake, part of Canoe Lake First Nation.
