Firefighters tackle house fire in N.B.

Aug 29, 2018 | 5:12 PM

It was a stressful time for residents at a home in North Battleford Wednesday, when a fire broke out in a basement suite.

Lisa Robbie, one of the residents of the house on 101 St, near 15 Ave., said she was thankful everyone got out in time. She said she has three cats and they also managed to escape without an issue.

“We had lots of warning,” Robbie said.

There were three suites in the building and five residents in total inside the house at the time. They all escaped safely.

Robbie thanked one of the residents who let everyone know about the fire so they all had enough time to get out quickly.

“There wasn’t even smoke in the house by the time we got out,” she said. “Everybody is fine.”

“It’s stressful because we don’t have a place to stay for tonight,” Robbie added. “We won’t be allowed back in tonight for sure.”

North Battleford Fire Dept. Fire Chief Trevor Brice said firefighters extinguished the blaze quickly, and confirmed there were no injuries as a result of the fire.

“One of the ladies was in the basement and she got out safely,” said Brice. “The basement is pretty badly damaged with fire, a lot of heat, smoke and fire down there. But everybody is safe. There is just a little bit of damage down there.”

He said there were flames and brown smoke coming out of the basement when the firefighters first arrived.

“It was just a few minutes once we got here to knock the fire down,” Brice said.

Firefighters managed to contain the fire. Brice said the fire department will need to assess the house for damages. The power to the building has been turned off in the meantime.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation, said Brice.

“We feel pretty lucky today because we actually had all our staff in on a course (at the fire hall),” Brice added, noting that a total of 18 firefighters attended the scene.
