With winter looming, many pets looking for homes at Humane Society

If you’re looking to adopt a pet, now is the perfect time to take the plunge.

The Battlefords Humane Society is holding their Feline Fall Frenzy until Friday. The sale provides all the benefits of a full cost adoption at a discounted price of $50. A regular adoption fee for cats under one year is $100, while over that age, is $150.

Shelter Coordinator Michelle Spark said this time every year the shelter begins to recieve many kittens and cats, as, when the weather cools down, concerned citizens tend to pick them up and bring them in.

“We found an easy solution to that was, every October, just before Halloween, we would … adopt out all cats for $50 for three days only,” she said.

The adoption price includes the cost of spaying or neutering the animal, a microchip and registration, first vaccination and any other medication needed during the animals stay at the shelter, a free visit to the vet within two weeks of adoption, and 30 days of free pet insurance, up to $750.

Spark knows people have their hearts in the right place when it comes to picking up strays, but warned against grabbing every animal they see.

“Don’t be so quick to pick them up,” she said. “A lot of them have homes and they’re just out roaming and they go home every night at supper time or every night at bedtime. Just because you see them out running around, doesn’t necessarily mean they’re homeless.”

A lot of the issue does fall on the pets owners, as there are rules against letting your pets roam the streets of the Battlefords. Making sure your pets are safe and close to home will ensure they don’t end up at the shelter.

“If they are caught and brought to the shelter, there will be fines on them for running at large and not having a license,” she said.

Not helping the situation, the shelter is over capacity. Spark said they currently house about 71 cats and 40 dogs, 31 of which are puppies under the age of 10 weeks.

For those not looking to adopt but still wanting to lend a hand, the Discovery Co-op is holding a pet food drive. Additionally, for every adoption between Oct. 12 and 31, the Co-Op will donate a bag of food to the shelter.
