October marks United Way month across Canada

Oct 9, 2018 | 2:33 PM

The city of North Battleford kicked off United Way month Tuesday with a flag-raising to mark the occasion.

This year marked the 49th year the United Way has operated in the Battlefords.

Monte Migneault, chairman of the board of directors and campaign chair for the United Way in the Battlefords, said the nearly five decades of time the organization has spent in the region would not be possible without the support of the city.

“The city’s been great for many years,” he said. “They provide us with an office that we work out of and without that type of contribution, it would be difficult to manage, so the city’s really great as far as providing support for us.”

In addition to the support from the city’s office, Migneault said the non-profit organization is grateful to the community for embracing their cause and helping out in a variety of ways; whether through offering up their free time volunteering or by supporting the United Way through donations.

“The Battlefords is a community of volunteers and, in my opinion, it’s a really tight-knit community,” Migneault said. “We do also have a lot of support from the businesses so hopefully that continues this year.”

For Migneault, this year marks his eighth as a member of the board and second as chair.

“I wanted to be a part of something that betters the community,” he said. “The opportunity came up to be a board member, so I joined and I’ve been happy to volunteer my time on a worthwhile cause since.”

The United Way is a worldwide agency featuring a conglomerate of nearly 4,000 community-based establishments across 46 countries and territories.

United Way Month aims to continue to increase fundraising efforts throughout the country through four main components. They include sending mail-outs to residents in the community, engaging with businesses and actively reaching out to local establishments in the area, encouraging them to consider donating, while asking local businesses to run workplace campaigns. The Battlefords United Way will also continue to host special events to raise money for the organization while providing a memorable experience for those in attendance.
