N.B. golf tournament a hit despite frosty weather

Sep 25, 2018 | 10:06 AM

It may be only September but kids taking part in the golf tournament fundraiser in North Battleford Sunday needed to sport their boots and woollies for the occasion.

Temperatures were cool and it had been snowing, so patches of white marked the green this year during the Third Annual Brian Maunula Memorial Junior Golf Tournament held at the Rustic Nine Golf Course.

Jaime Maunula, one of the organizers, said the tournament went off well regardless.

“Despite the weather, we were able to top the amount we raised last year,” said Maunula.

“I’m happy that we did better than last year,” she added. “I was hoping for a bit more, but given the circumstances, I think it was very successful. Considering the weather, we only had a few kids who didn’t show up. Most of the kids still came out to golf.”

The event raised $27,109 in total for the Jim Pattison Children’s Hospital Foundation, with more pledges still to come in for the tournament for youth from ages four to 14. In addition to the golf fundraiser, there was also a silent auction as part of the event.

A total of 59 golfers registered for the tournament, which is close to a sell-out, Maunula said. The top fundraiser was Zander Ryan, with $2,025 for the cause.

To make sure the kids golfing could see the balls in the snow, organizers arranged to have some orange balls available for the event.

“The kids golfed in the morning. Despite the snow on the course, they were still able to go ahead.”

Maunula said kids were continuing to bring in more pledges at the end of the tournament, even those who decided not to golf due to the weather.

“We told everyone to dress warmly,” said Maunula, adding there was also plenty of hot chocolate and coffee available to warm everyone up.

“I think it’s more the parents that are worried about the weather than the kids,” she added.

Maunula said she is looking forward to continuing the fundraiser event again next year, and so on.

“We’ll keep going as long as they allow us to keep coming here,” she said, adding she appreciates everyone’s support, especially Elaine and Victor Liebaert, owners of Rustic Nine Golf Course. The Liebaerts donate use of the course for the event each year.

All proceeds raised from the event benefits the Jim Pattison Children’s Hospital Foundation.
