Humane Society looking for new homes for large influx of cats

Jul 24, 2018 | 3:00 PM

The Battlefords Humane Society is asking for animal lovers to show their love and drop by the centre in North Battleford to adopt a pet.

Shelter coordinator Michelle Spark said the facility currently has a large number of kitties for which it is looking to find homes. The shelter currently has 69 cats and 23 dogs.

“Cat numbers have definitely gone up,” Spark said. “It’s been a really busy spring and summer with the cats. Our dog numbers were quite high in the beginning earlier in the year and they’ve come down quite a bit. We’ve had lots of adoptions. Our dog numbers are average, but our cat numbers are higher than we would like them to be.”

Spark wants to remind cat owners to visit the shelter if their cat has gone missing. She recommends people get a cat licence through the city and a microchip as well to make sure their cat can be identified if it does disappear.

Plans for new facility coming along

The local humane society is getting closer to having a brand new facility and is continuing its fundraising efforts for the project.

“We’re in negotiations with the city right now,” Spark said. “So our hope is to start building in the spring of 2019, and be in the new shelter by 2020. It’s really good news.”

The shelter is looking at a location proposed in the industrial park area of North Battleford.

Plans are to have a centre for both a shelter and a boarding facility. The project will also include a doggie-day care on site.

The estimated cost of the build is about $2.6 million. So far about a quarter of the cost has been raised.

“We’re doing lots of fundraising towards the new building,” Spark said.

She said the goal was to have a larger facility so there would be more space, more soundproofing and improved ventilation.

“We’re hoping to accommodate more than what we have, but we really don’t want our numbers any higher,” Spark said. “The goal with the new building is to be able to section it off differently.”
