U.S. cycling group, raising cancer awareness, comes to N.B.

A U.S. youth cycling group on a charity mission that stopped in North Battleford Sunday aims to raise awareness and funds to help fight cancer.

Development manager of the non-profit organization, Texas 4000, Courtney Becker told battlefordsNOW Monday the group completes the annual bike ride each year.

“Our mission is to cultivate student leaders and engage communities in the fight against cancer,” she said, adding the group aims to “spread hope, knowledge and charity” over the 70-day bike ride.

The group of 69 riders, from University of Texas, left Austin, Texas on June 2 and hopes to reach Anchorage, Alaska on Aug. 10, after passing through the United States and Canada along the way. 

“Our founder wanted to create the longest ever bike ride,” Becker said. “We love getting to meet so many wonderful people in Canada who have supported us for many years now.”

Becker said the student riders are raising funds for cancer research and support services in the United States and Canada. They are also giving cancer-awareness presentations.

Many students taking part have been affected by cancer in some way and “felt compelled to give back to this cause,” she said.

She said the group’s aim is to let people know by following a healthy lifestyle they may be less likely to become a victim of cancer. As examples she said most cancers can be prevented through the use of sunscreen and tobacco cessation.
