Sharks outmatched by Bears; fall 5-1 in first game

Feb 27, 2018 | 9:00 AM

Battlefords AAA Sharks goaltender Haylie Biever had her hands full against the defending league champions Monday night.

The 15-year-old Saskatoon native made 39 saves in her post-season debut, a 5-1 loss in the team’s playoff opener against the second-ranked Prince Albert Northern Bears. The Bears outshot the Sharks 44-21, and held them to just three shots on goal in the second period. The Bears scored three straight in the third to go up 5-0 before the Sharks got their only goal late in the game.

As usual, special teams played a major role in the result. The Bears got two power play goals and a shorthanded goal, while the Sharks late goal came on a power play from Taylor Gravelle. The Sharks power play went 0-for-4 in the first two periods, unable to close the gap early.

The Bears got two goals from Camryn Amundson, one from Miranda Heidt, and one each from Abby and Alli Soyko. Abby Soyko was named the game’s first star.

Sharks defenceman Maya Tupper, who had a power play assist, was named second star of the game, while Biever was named first star.

The teams will meet up for game two in the Battlefords Wednesday.

Last year, these two teams also met in the first round, when the Sharks were swept after losses of 2-1, 5-0, and 7-3.
