Horse struck on highway an ongoing issue for RCMP

Nov 1, 2016 | 12:05 PM

After a horse was hit on Highway 4 North over the weekend, RCMP are reminding residents to watch for animals on the roads.

On Sunday Oct. 30, RCMP received complaints at roughly 10 a.m. of horses on Highway 4 North towards Cochin. According to Sgt. Carl Dinsdale with the Battleford RCMP detachment, when police responded, horses could be seen but well off the roads.

Roughly half an hour later the same morning, RCMP received a complaint of a horse struck by a vehicle in the same area. The reporter didn’t witness the accident, but saw the injured horse.

The RCMP believe the animal was hit the night prior and Dinsdale said it was believed by a larger commercial vehicle.

“Typically when a passenger vehicle strikes a horse at highway speed, it’s like hitting a moose,” Dinsdale said. “It causes a tremendous amount of damage and it’s very dangerous.”

The Sergeant asked motorists travelling along Highway 4 North and South to use caution, adding typically wildlife walk on the road ways when weather is colder.

“I think especially when salt’s applied to the road they’ll come to the road for the salt. Motorist need to be aware and drive defensively in those areas,” Dinsdale said.
