Clinic coming to N.B. to help with oil spill-related claims

Aug 8, 2016 | 2:12 PM

Individuals and businesses affected by the recent oil spill are invited to a clinic in the city, where representatives will help attendees file claims.

The clinic, hosted by the insurance company handling Husky Energy’s claims, will take place Friday and Saturday at the Don Ross Centre in North Battleford.

A Husky Energy pipeline leaked an estimated 250,000 litres of oil into the North Saskatchewan River near Maidstone more than two weeks ago.

North Battleford has been following water restrictions since the spill, which partially or fully shut down some businesses, including laundromats and car washes. Business owners in the community have been concerned about losing money and employee hours and one car wash has turned to trucking water in just to stay open.

Appointments for the claims clinic can be booked online and anyone is welcome to receive assistance in filing a claim, according to Husky representative Mel Duvall. He said there will be drop-in times, but encourages people to book appointments so staff can be sure to see everyone.

Husky has a toll-free line as well to assist with claims, but Duvall said the clinic is for anyone who would prefer to meet face-to-face to have their questions answered.

People should bring all documents relevant to their claims to the clinic, including receipts, invoices and bank account details.

This clinic follows one in Prince Albert over the weekend, which Duvall said helped 94 people.

The claims clinic will be at the Don Ross Centre Friday, Aug. 12 and Saturday, Aug. 13 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day.
