RCMP and others awarded for outstanding service

May 22, 2016 | 12:00 PM

Members of the RCMP were recognizing for their work and for going above and beyond the call of duty at the RCMP Awards. Lieutenant Governor of Saskatchewan Vaughn Schofield handed out the awards at Fort Battleford on Thursday, May 19.

One award recipient was not part of the RCMP. Chelsy Villeneuve, a nurse practitioner from Meadow Lake Hospital, received the St. Johns Ambulance Lifesaving award.

Villeneuve earned her award by stepping into an incident and quickly putting her medical skills to use.

“I was driving down the highway and I saw a bunch of commotion,” she said. “I saw an officer performing CPR so I stopped to help. I told him I was a nurse and he moved out of the way and I started doing compressions. When the ambulance arrived he still was coding. Coding is a term used that means someone is pulseless.

“It felt like an eternity for them to show up. It was closer to 10 minutes.

Paramedics were able to revive the individual. According to Villeneuve, without the CPR to keep the blood flowing and oxygen in the blood, paramedics would have dealt with a dead body.

Constable Kyle Vanditmars, who helped Villeneuve at the scene, received the same award.

“I couldn’t do it,” Lieutenant Governor of Saskatchewan Vaughn Schofield said. “I very much admire what they do, and their capability, and the fact they put their lives on the line. Their families often do not get as much of their time as they’d like. They put themselves out there for the rest of us, so these awards are important.”

Schofield said she makes a point of attending as many award ceremonies as she can.
