North Stars drop ninth straight in 4-0 loss to Melfort

Oct 28, 2026 | 11:53 PM

The Battlefords North Stars lost their ninth straight game, falling 4-0 to the Melfort Mustangs.

It was the North Stars’ second shutout loss to the Mustangs this season and their fourth overall, surpassing last season’s total.

North Stars assistant coach Owen Lamb described the loss as “disappointing,” saying the team struggled to get the puck to the middle of the offensive zone.

The North Stars were shorthanded seven times but held the Mustangs to one goal on seven power-play opportunities.

After a back-and-forth first period, the teams went into the second tied 0-0.

After one: Tied 0-0. Shots: 8-8.

Tyson Janzen opened the scoring for the Mustangs at 13:21 of the second period.

Janzen took a pass in the slot from Lincoln Rogers while streaking towards the net. Despite being turned around, Janzen spun, brought the puck to his forehand and slid it past Nathan Claydon to make it 1-0.

The North Stars had a power-play opportunity near the end of the period, but the Mustangs held on to take a 1-0 lead into the third.

After two: Mustangs lead 1-0. Period shots: 13-9 Mustangs. Total shots: 21-17 Mustangs.

Matthew Bertolin scored his team-leading 12th goal of the season on a power-play one-timer at 11:30 of the third period to give Melfort a 2-0 lead.

Rogers extended the Mustangs’ lead to 3-0 at 16:23, scoring on a high shot on a two-on-one for his second goal of the season.

Janzen added his second goal of the game on a backhand shot on a breakaway to seal the win for the Mustangs.

Final score: Mustangs win 4-0. Third-period shots: 15-9 Mustangs. Total shots: 36-26 Mustangs.

The North Stars will try to avoid their 10th straight loss Friday when they open a two-game home series against the Weyburn Red Wings to close out October.
