Free stethoscope checks aim to raise heart valve disease awareness
A free public stethoscope check is bringing awareness of heart valve disease to the Battlefords area.
The event, hosted by Saskatoon-based cardiologist Dr. Janine Eckstein, will take place Sept. 15 at the Twin City Medical Clinic from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
“Heart valve disease is very common and serious,” said Eckstein. “We know that it increases with age. Over the age of 65, we start to see it more and more commonly, although there are young people as well that can get valve disease.”
According to ScienceDirect, the disease is estimated to affect nearly one million Canadians, yet awareness and screening rates remain poorly characterized in primary care settings.
