Battle River Archers embrace challenge of new outdoor range

He estimates there are only about three other field archery courses in Saskatchewan, making the Battlefords range a unique addition for the sport in the province.

The course has received positive feedback, despite being designed to be challenging. For archers trying to qualify for high-level teams, Kuntz said easier courses can be more appealing because they provide an opportunity to post higher scores.

“This is a challenging course, it’s not one that they’re using to put up high scores, but it’s a great place to practice.”

The range has already hosted several nationally sanctioned shoots and fun shoots over the past few months, with Kuntz saying the events have been well attended.

The club is also looking ahead to next summer, when it hopes to add more 3D animal targets to the course. The targets would give local bow hunters another reason to use the range as they prepare for hunting season.

“It’s a great place to come out and practice and prepare for hunting season and that sort of thing. So that’s what we hope to push more next summer and try and build membership from bow hunters and get more of those types of people using it because it’s a great spot for that kind of practice as well.”

The range is also helping some of the club’s top archers prepare for the international stage. Three Battle River Archers members will represent Canada at the World Championships in Yankton, South Dakota, in late September.

While the outdoor season winds down, the club is turning its attention indoors, with an indoor target shoot, Christmas fun shoot and a tentative indoor 3D shoot planned.

The club also plans to submit a bid to host the indoor 3D provincials in February.
