Battleford shifts development review costs from taxpayers to applicants
Battleford council has approved a policy aimed at ensuring taxpayers no longer shoulder the cost of outside experts hired to review complex private development proposals, shifting those expenses to applicants instead.
The change applies when development or subdivision applications require specialized expertise beyond the town’s in-house resources.
While many development applications can be reviewed by municipal staff, more complex proposals sometimes require the town to hire outside professionals before council can make an informed decision.
For example, a proposed subdivision or commercial development could require engineering assessments of municipal infrastructure, legal review of development agreements or planning analysis before council decides whether to approve the project.
