Traffic, venue preparations underway for Tony Cote Summer Games

Jul 14, 2026 | 2:24 PM

Preparations are ramping up across the Battlefords as the community gets ready to welcome an estimated 20,000 athletes, coaches, families and spectators for the Tony Cote Summer Games.

City crews are completing additional maintenance, improving facilities and setting up equipment ahead of the week-long event from July 26 to 31.

“It’s your normal upkeep plus a little bit more just to make it available for a whole lot of people to come at one time. We’re bringing out bleachers; we’re bringing extra garbage cans and picnic tables and whatnot to the different locations,” said Cheryl DeNeire, the City of North Battleford’s director of parks and recreation.

Staff are also working with Community Safety Officers to manage traffic, parking and road barriers around multiple venues.

“There’s going to be a lot of people, and so that’s where the CSOs are going to be working to make sure that traffic flow is well maintained and kept,” DeNeire said. “That’ll be up to the CSO department to work on traffic issues throughout that week, if there are any.”

Residents can expect heavier traffic throughout the city, particularly near competition venues. DeNeire said some back alleys may be less accessible because of traffic control measures, but homeowners will still be able to access their properties.

The city said the additional work is not creating extra costs for the games.

“The games did apply for a Sask. Lotteries grant for the community grant program. They received some money for that; anything upwards of $10,000 will be covered for the rentals. Any of the staffing or equipment in that regard is all covered for free,” DeNeire said.

Athlete village

Battlefords Agency Tribal Chiefs (BATC) is also reminding the public that access to the Athlete Village will be restricted to accredited athletes, coaches and chaperones.

“All individuals must wear and present their accreditation tag to enter. Individuals without a photo on their accreditation tag will need to present a photo ID,” BATC said in a notice.

Family members, friends and organizational leaders will not be permitted inside the Athlete Village. Instead, they are encouraged to meet athletes at the Entertainment and Cultural Village, which will be open from 10 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday.

BATC said all vehicles entering will be subject to accreditation checks. Visitor parking will be available but limited.

Schedules, cultural events and game results are available on the BATC website.
