Battlefords Bandits U11 squad ends year in fourth at provincials

As the softball season winds down, teams across Saskatchewan are participating in their provincial tournaments. A pair of Battlefords Bandits squads are preparing for the climax of their seasons, while the U11 Bandits team, coached by Lindsay Palmer, is reflecting on its year after finishing fourth at provincials in Saskatoon.

“I had quite a young crew this year. We only had two returning players,” said Palmer.

“But these girls worked hard right from the get-go. We went to several tournaments and were always right in there with the best teams. The girls had such fantastic attitudes. They had so much fun.”

Palmer said they went into provincials knowing they had a shot to bring home a medal, but ran into a pair of tough Saskatoon teams, falling in the semifinals and the bronze medal game.

Some of their players had limited experience, so he said nerves may have got the best of them at provincials against some high-level players.

“Most of them learned to play ball last year to playing A-ball, which is a huge jump,” said Palmer. “There are some really strong players in U11 A-ball already. So, a lot of them were quite nervous. We were we played in a tournament all year so that helped with their preparation and so they knew a little bit what to expect but I think the whole provincial championship made them a little bit nervous but they kind of got into the groove of it and they really did fantastic.”

Though there were ups and downs throughout the year, Palmer was happy with the players’ mentality, especially with the fact it was a young team.

“For such a young group, they were able to really reflect on that and kind of think, okay, we got down on ourselves because of this and we’re not going to do it next time. As coaches, we found it really cool how they recognized that, and they worked harder.”

As a former Bandits player, Palmer was proud to coach a squad representing the Battlefords on a provincial level.

“I personally love it. The fact that they’re playing A ball and they’re competing at that level. I always sit back and I’m amazed at the skill level that these young girls have. I think it is just absolutely amazing how far they’ve come from the beginning of the season to where they were at this last weekend.”

The season isn’t over for the entire Bandits organization. The U17, U15 and U13 squads will all participate in their respective provincial tournaments from July 10 to 13.
