REGULAR SEASON CONCLUDING

North Battleford Beavers senior baseball team gearing up for NSRBL playoffs

The North Saskatchewan River Baseball League (NSRBL) regular season is winding down, and the North Battleford Beavers are getting ready for the playoffs to roll around.

The Beavers finished off their dominant regular season with a 12-2 record and will finish either first or second in the NSRBL, depending on the Unity Cardinals’ final game against the Oil City Ducks on July 5.

If Unity wins that game, the Beavers will finish second in the league. If Oil City takes down the Cardinals, the Beavers will end the regular season atop the league.

Throughout the season, team manager Kyle Gregoire said he thinks the team’s hitting has improved the most.

“I think just gradually as the season went on there. We definitely had our ups and downs there, but you just got the feeling that everybody’s clicking now and that’s the perfect time to get going.”

As the regular season concludes its final few games, the Beavers are preparing to face either Oil City or the Lashburn Cardinals.

“We’ve definitely had some really good games against both of them. We had a double header for a game against Oil City and the first one was really close. The second one we got away on them a little bit there, but can’t take them lightly,” said Gregoire.

“Lashburn has some really good offense, so we’d have to definitely mitigate that. But I think we have a good chance of coming out alive on that one.”

Aiming for their fourth straight championship, the Beavers aren’t letting the pressure get to them heading into the playoffs.

“I think that’s not even in our mindset there, for the fact that we’ve had success the last few years. I think as long as we stick to our game plan, we’ll have success there. So I don’t think there’s really any more built up pressure by any means there,” he said.

“At the end of the day, we got teams that are trying to take the championship and we just got to be prepared going into it. I think we’re sitting pretty good there and we’re pretty confident going into playoffs.”

While the league has yet to confirm playoff dates, Gregoire said he expects the team’s first home playoff game to be on either July 6 or July 9.

The league playoffs won’t be the last baseball of the season for the Beavers, who will also play at the provincial championships from Aug. 7 to 9.
