Saulteaux First Nation issues eviction warning amid safety concerns

Saulteaux First Nation has issued a memo outlining new measures to address community safety concerns following a meeting earlier this month.

The June 17 meeting brought together Elders, the prevention and wellness teams, and Chief and Council to discuss safety and well-being in the community.

“There was much discussion about the concern for safety and wellbeing of everyone in the community, specifically the countless children who reside here,” the memo states.

Leadership said the priority is to support community members in improving their lives, but those who refuse available help will face eviction.

Effective June 25, anyone selling drugs, disturbing the peace, hosting parties or occupying a housing unit without approval will be evicted.

Since the meeting, two people have been evicted, with one additional eviction pending. Three people have received Band Council Resolutions, with one more pending, and nine final warning letters have been issued.

The warning letters give recipients the opportunity to change their behaviour, access addictions treatment or mental health supports, or relocate if they believe it is in their best interest.

“If the tenant refuses to choose one of the options, and disregard the final warning letter, they will be evicted. The utilities will be cut. The unit will be cleaned out and reallocated to a healthy family in need,” the memo states.

The memo also encourages community members to report suspicious or illegal activity to the RCMP.
