Battlefords Youth Soccer Inc. had its shed broken into overnight June 23, with several items stolen in the second such incident this season.

The theft will not stop the club’s operations, but director Kat Huxley said several smaller pieces of equipment were taken.

“It was a lot of smaller things like wagons that our coaches use to transport equipment,” Huxley said.

“Things like our rubber mallet that pounds our stakes into the ground when we’re putting up our nets. Things that were a little more easily accessible.”

Huxley said the club has other equipment, including nets and balls, but those items were moved quickly to prevent them from being taken if another break-in occurs.

After the club shared news of the incident online, community members responded with offers to help.

“There’s nothing more appreciated than seeing a community come together when something unfortunate happens,” Huxley said.

“I know that not everyone looks at the Battlefords with a bright light all the time, but those people don’t understand that the people in our community are amazing. It could be any youth sport in our community or any activity, people are always willing to help out and make sure that things are there for people in our community.”

For now, Huxley said the most helpful thing residents can do is report suspicious activity.

“If you see something, say something,” she said.

“If you notice that someone probably shouldn’t be breaking into a smaller building, just be willing to call the police. Until we really know what was more damaged or taken, we don’t really have an answer on how people can help with that.”

The club is assessing the full extent of the damage and plans to file a police report. Huxley said the response from residents has reinforced the community’s support for youth sports and other positive activities in the Battlefords.
