“I was really interested in aviation since I was really young… I wanted to become a pilot. I moved to Canada five years ago and then I found out about Royal Military College and I wanted to be an officer in the military, then either pilot or an air combat engineer, so something related to aviation,” he explained.

That interest led him to join the Air Cadets program in North Battleford.

“I was like waiting for Wednesdays to come here and learn new things and teach and do drills as a whole group. So that kind of stuff really is something what I wanted to do, even in my future.”

Kim will transfer to the Edmonton squadron for his final year before pursuing plans to attend the Royal Military College, earn an engineering degree and enter the airmen selection process.

Trophy presentations

Cpl. Noah Hunt received the Special Constable Wayne Boskill Memorial Trophy, awarded annually to the cadet with the highest mark in air studies. The award honours Special Constable Wayne Boskill, who died in an RCMP aircraft crash at Wollaston Lake in 1986.

Flight Cpl. Ivan Yaniuk received the Myron Stetzenko Memorial Trophy, presented each year to a cadet who demonstrates strong leadership and outstanding drill. The award honours former cadet Myron Stetzenko, who died in a car accident in 1982.

Flight Sgt. Anton Steinhardt received the Major Walter Kostyna Public Speaking Award, presented to the winner of 43 Squadron’s Effective Speaking competition who advances to the zone level.

Leading Air Cadet William Myburgh received the Unsung Hero Award, recognizing a cadet who volunteers where needed, supports unit morale and shows outstanding dedication to the squadron.

Medal presentations

Sgt. Alex Kim received the Royal Canadian Legion Cadet Medal of Excellence, awarded to cadets who demonstrate outstanding citizenship and community service outside the cadet program.

Flight Sgt. Anton Steinhardt received the Bar and Rosette to the Air Cadet Service Medal, recognizing five years of service as a cadet.

Flight Sgt. Matthew Kim, Sgt. Alex Kim and Sgt. Alex van Meer received the Air Cadet Service Medal for completing four years of service.

Many other cadets also received attendance awards, promotions and other proficiency level presentations during the June 20 ceremonial review.
