"THERE WAS A NEED FOR AN EASIER WAY"

Battlefords garage sale website makes finding local listings easier for shoppers

For Brandon Raiche, there’s nothing better than finding treasures at a local garage sale, but figuring out where and when yard sales were happening wasn’t easy to track.

“Most of them are on Facebook, but with Facebook you see lots of outdated things,” he explained. “A lot of the time, street-corner signs are flopping in the wind or the garage sale boards around town get rained on and are hard to read.”

That frustration inspired him to create a free community garage sale website for the Battlefords area where residents can post their sales in one convenient place.

“I did some of the coding myself, and I also used prompts for help with things like adding features or troubleshooting, using AI to generate ideas for what should be included on the website,” Raiche said.

The site was designed to be as user-friendly as possible, even for people who are not comfortable with technology. When posting a sale, users are prompted to enter the address, sale dates and a description of the items available.

“I review the submissions in my admin portal and approve them,” he said. “There’s a map that only shows sales happening that day, either currently underway or starting later. As soon as the garage sale is over, it automatically disappears from the page.”

The site has already received positive feedback from community members, particularly in local Facebook groups.

“Would be a great asset instead of having to drive to the two boards on each side of town,” commented Angela Odgers.

“Hopefully this takes off and actually works. Would help so much!” said Chelsie Yarrow.

“K, this is so cool!” Tawney McCabe commented.

Raiche said new garage sale listings are being added regularly and he hopes the site continues to grow as more residents learn about it, making it easier for bargain hunters to find sales across the Battlefords.
