A Battlefords family will be heading to Vancouver next month to experience the FIFA World Cup as Canada hosts matches in the tournament for the first time.

Lisa Kissick, her spouse and 14-year-old son Bradley will attend the opening World Cup match at B.C. Place between Turkey and Australia.

For Bradley, a goalkeeper with Battlefords United Football Club, the trip is the culmination of a passion for soccer that began through Battlefords Youth Soccer.

“The soccer club here is incredible. The families and coaches are amazing, and his passion for the game just grew and grew,” Lisa said. “He found his real calling a couple of years ago as a goalie, which has caused me lots of stress, but he’s a remarkable player.”

Lisa said the family originally hoped to attend one of Canada’s matches, but the dates they chose lined up with the Turkey-Australia game instead.

Still, Bradley quickly embraced Turkey’s long-awaited return to the tournament.

“Turkey hasn’t been in the World Cup since 2002,” Lisa said. “It’s been 24 years and they actually got third place that year. They lost in the semifinals to Brazil, who went on to win it all. We’re pretty excited to watch their comeback.”

Although the family does not have Turkish roots, they have fully embraced the fandom ahead of the trip.

“I’ve been told by my son that’s who we’ll be cheering for,” Lisa said with a laugh. “We all now have Turkey jerseys that we’ll be wearing. The whole atmosphere is what we’re looking forward to the most.”

Along with attending the match, the family plans to take in World Cup festivities around Vancouver, including fan events and exhibits throughout the city.

Lisa said local soccer organizations have played a major role in helping grow Bradley’s love for the sport.

“I can’t imagine being part of another sports club,” she said. “It’s such a great atmosphere and every kid involved seems to grow more passionate about the game year after year.”

For Bradley, it’s a chance to go from local pitches in the Battlefords to the world stage, taking in a sport he loves at its highest level.
