Battleford revives former youth centre with renovation plan

For some long-time residents, the Battlefords Community Youth Centre (BCYC) building holds memories of busy evenings spent signing up for sports or attending scouts meetings.

Today, the once lively hub for the community’s youth has sat silent for decades, used mainly for storage instead of the activities that once filled its walls.

“Part of this term, I want to evaluate everything in the town of Battleford and if we’re not using it, we need to figure out a way to use it or get rid of it,” said Mayor Ames Leslie.

Town Council has now approved a $21,538 renovation plan aimed at bringing the building back into public use.

“It’s a building that many people have fond memories of, but it’s been sitting idle for the last few years and becoming dilapidated. I appreciate administration bringing forth a very affordable solution and renovation proposal.”

Over the past few years, community members have contacted the town with inquiries on hosting events and classes in the building.

“Rental space is at a premium in this community,” Leslie explained. “So, if we can offer one more thing that somebody could rent and maybe host some community events or some functions, that’s just one more good thing for our community.”

Leslie hopes these renovations will be completed before fall of this year.
