TECHNOLOGY IS MAGICAL

Touring magician talks modern technology in magic

As the years have gone by, industries worldwide have adapted to modern technology as it has advanced. The magic industry is no different.

“Magic has modernized a lot over the last few years,” said Jordan Murciano, whose touring show, The Experience, is coming to the Battlefords in July. “That’s something I love about the business right now.”

Murciano talked about how many acts, including his own, have used modern technology, noting different kinds of tricks use people’s phones in the crowd, making shows more modern and interactive.

The use of people’s phones in tricks has also expanded to close-up magic.

“Someone picks a card, they put the card back in the deck facing the other way, but then I give the deck a bunch of shuffles face up and face down. They spread them out. We take a photo with someone’s iPhone and in the photo all the cards are facing one way except their one card.”

Show production has also adapted to modern technology, allowing acts to be more self-sufficient.

“There’s a lot of new tech that’s coming out now where magicians can be their own sound guy or their own lighting person,” Murciano said. “Now I don’t need to go to a venue five hours before the show and do a rehearsal with some random sound or lighting guy. I can do my whole show with a button in my pocket and an iPad and a sound system that’s in my case on stage.”

Murciano mentioned while he hasn’t fully dived into it, he has seen the use of artificial intelligence come to the forefront.

“I know firsthand some things which I can’t reveal or talk about, magician’s secret. But I’m seeing it and it’s happening stronger than ever. I don’t know if I can ever trust it, I love being in control of my show.”

It’s important to Murciano that magic shows also include props and items that are very accessible. “Rubik’s Cube, a book, an envelope, I think once you’re bringing in too much ‘tack to the props,’ it deteriorates what magic really is. I want to do something in my show with a Rubik’s Cube and make you want to go home and try it with your own Rubik’s Cube that you have there.”

In his show, Murciano aims to do what he describes as modern and original. “People will most likely never see it again once the show leaves the venue.”

The all-ages show runs July 14 and 15 at Community Players in Battleford as part of Murciano’s world tour.
