Father charged with killing son, 5, daughter, 3, found in vehicle in Calgary

CALGARY — Calgary police say a man charged with first-degree murder in the deaths of two children — a five-year-old boy and a three-year-old girl — is their father.

The children were found Thursday in an SUV along a busy thoroughfare in the city’s northwest.

Police said they had received a phone call around 10 a.m. that led them to the Jeep, which was stopped, and the man was arrested outside the vehicle.

Court records say the children were killed a day earlier.

The father made his first court appearance Friday, and information identifying the victims can’t be released under a publication ban.

Police haven’t said how the children died but autopsies were scheduled for later Friday.

“This is a devastating and unimaginable loss. Our hearts are with the victims’ loved ones, and with the officers and first responders who both attended the scene and who are seeing through the investigation,” Staff Sgt. Mark Rahn said in a statement.

“These are extraordinarily difficult investigations, both professionally and personally, and we are committed to getting justice for these victims.”
