Fire damages donations behind North Battleford second hand store

Apr 21, 2026 | 1:19 PM

When Barb Rosendahl, manager of the Mennonite Community Closet arrived at work on Monday morning, she came across a scene she had never seen before.

“I got here at 6:30 a.m., there was a stove that they used, and they had plastic pallets back there and a couple of tarps and plywood, and they did burn a lot of donations.”

Rosendahl explained how an encampment was set up near the donation door located at the back of the building. It was unclear to her why the items were burnt.

“That was the first time we’ve ever had a fire. I’m just worried that the store is going to start on fire because it’s actually quite close to the store,” she said.

A report of the incident was reported to local RCMP and the North Battleford Fire Department.

“They said it would be good if we had cameras because sometimes, we use the city hall camera to see the action going on here, but they can’t see their faces.”

Darla Eppen, a store worker, said the fire wasn’t all that happened at the location over the weekend.

“Somebody tried to break into the building too, because pieces of the stucco right beside the door were actually busted off. Someone’s trying to get in.”

Eppen said she has no immediate fear of someone breaking into the building while she is working, especially with the training she has received.

“We have a lady come in and train us how to deal with situations. Usually, we stand together when there’s any kind of episode. She tells us just to stick together, the more, the better.”

With these donations being damaged, the store now has less options to give back to the community.

“The store does give to the homeless, they give to people in need. There was one time I remember, a lady came in and she had nothing. We provided her with a lot of the stuff she needed,” said Eppen.

The business asks that all donations be made from Monday to Friday, during store hours to avoid any issues moving forward.
