No motion to close Sakewew High School, says director of education

Battlefords First Nations Joint Board of Education states there is no motion to close Sakewew High School.

This comes after a press release called ‘BATC Calls for Collaborative Solutions Following Closure of Sakewew High School’ by Battlefords Agency Tribal Chiefs (BATC).

“Potentially, yes, that could happen, but potentially, said Randy Fox, director of education.

What is changing is the loss of a partnership agreement that existed between Sakewew High School, Living Sky School Division and Light of Christ School Division that was in place for nearly 25 years.

“The steps that have to be taken for the future for the school to stay open is there needs to be a governing body. There needs to be a board established and some support from the province and I would say also from bands in our area of the province here if the school is going to stay open,” Fox said.

The school will operate as usual at this time and will continue for the 2026 – 2027 school year.

“We’d be happy to talk to BATC. I’m glad to see that they want to look for collaborative solutions to provide educational services, as has been happening in that school for many years,” Fox said.

“As far as them saying the school was closed, that’s just unfortunately, some misinformation or maybe some misreading on their part as to what has actually happened to this point.”

BATC CEO, Leslie Ann Smith, said the release was their response to the initial announcement of the ended funding which was released to the public at the end of March.

“We were under the impression that with the funding agreements that the school board sent on that letter was that they were transitioning out of the funding. That to us said that the school would probably not survive that. But in saying that, they obviously come up with something that’s going to work, and that’s great.”

Smith said BATC hopes to partner and look for solutions that can ensure youth in the community can continue receiving education from Sakewew High School.

“Our chiefs just want what’s best for the kids. So, if they get this sorted out and they’re able to continue with Sakewew as it is, that’s going to be awesome. We’ll do whatever we can to support that.”
