One Win Away From The Finals

North Stars within a win of the finals after 3-2 game five victory over Yorkton

Apr 11, 2026 | 11:33 PM

The Battlefords North Stars have taken a 3-2 series lead in the SJHL semifinals and are knocking on the door of their fourth finals appearance in the last eight seasons when championships were awarded (championships were not awarded in 2020-2021).

They won game five by the score of 3-2, led by a 31 save performance by Kaeden Serpa and two goals by Cole Hines.

The North Stars got on the board first at the 12:15 mark of the opening frame. On the power play, Raiden Zacharias shot the puck from the point which Hines deflected out of the air and through the five hole of Terriers goaltender Callum Creig to put the North Stars up 1-0.

Terriers captain Tylan Henrikson tied things up with his first goal of the playoffs later in the frame. Henrikson beat Gavin Granger out wide before bringing it towards the net, crossing the crease before sliding it past Serpa to tie it up at 1-1 at 17:03.

After one: Tied 1-1

Just 30 seconds into the period, the North Stars tied the game courtesy of Finlay Klippenstein. The North Stars rookie grabbed the puck in the high slot before turning and firing it top shelf past the glove of Creig. Klippenstein gave the North Stars a 2-1 lead with his sixth goal in the playoffs, which is one behind the league lead.

Yorkton tied up the game not long after at the 2:39 mark. Vinay Junek put a puck off the post, and Aidan Vallance got the rebound and scored from the right side of the slot to make it 2-2.

The rest of the period was back and forth, but neither team got on the board for the remainder of the frame.

 After two: Tied 2-2

In the most important 20 minutes of the season so far for both teams, the first 15 minutes of it remained scoreless thanks to some big saves from both goaltenders.

That was, until Alessio Nardelli tried a shot off the faceoff, which was blocked but it went right to Hines who scored his second goal of the game to put the North Stars up 3-2 with less than five minutes to go at the 15:15 mark.

For the final minutes, the Terriers were pressing and their biggest chance of the game came from the stick of Jye Zawatsky, but Serpa sprawled across the crease to make his biggest save of the season so far to keep it a 3-2 game, and the North Stars hung on for the win.

Final score: 3-2 North Stars

Series: 3-2 North Stars

The series heads back to the Battlefords on April 13 when the North Stars have a chance to advance to the Canterra Seeds Cup finals for the first time when they won their fourth championship in 2023.
