“We just need to make sure that everything that is being done in this facility is legitimate, and the government is aware of it. We want to make sure our governing Ministry of Health, our partner, is aware and signs off on it as well,” said Leslie. 

Prior to the application being brought to council, residents in a 75-meter radius of the proposed facility were notified. In one response submitted, it was brought to the town’s attention that a previous operation has been in place for women in need for the past few years.  

“Approvals do not appear to be applied for or granted at any time,” said a representative for Northbound Planning. “However, this application now is addressing that operation and the change to the current operation.” 

Mayor Leslie and council have also asked for questions to be answered before making a decision. 

“What type of clients are going to be in it? Are they mobile or are they stay within the facility the whole time? Who is responsible, is this a provincial mandated organization or a federally mandated organization or is this Indigenous Services Canada?” he asked. 

This application has been tabled by the council until their next meeting on May 4.
