Aerial Cheer Athletics and John Paul II Collegiate cheer reflect on provincial championships

Over the weekend, the Cheer Provincial Championships took place in Saskatoon, with various cheer teams from North Battleford competing. 

The John Paul II Crusaders cheer team finished in third place, although Aerial Cheer Athletics director Rena Fauchon said it wasn’t their greatest run. 

“We had a couple of stunts that didn’t hit. So that’s that can make or break a performance. You only get 2 1/2 minutes to do your thing,” said Fauchon. “But the rest of the routine was great. They gave it their all and we were proud with the outcomes.” 

The provincial championship was the final competition of the season, a year that Fauchon was very satisfied with. 

“When we started this year, we were unsure you know, who was joining, what it was going to look like. We lost some athletes last year to graduation. They surpassed our our ideas of what was going to happen this year. And like they got, you know, first in four competitions. Every week they just got better adapted to changes.”

The Aerial Cheer Athletics U16 Eclipse team finished second place at provincial. It was their second time finishing in second, adding to a third place and first-place finish as well. 

Their U12 Nova team finished fifth, despite being down an athlete. “Kudos to our coaches’ quick thinking as well and being able to talk to athletes through it, tell them what’s going to change,” said Fauchon.

“Then the athletes being able to adapt. They did well. We were happy to watch and the performance was good.” 

Aerial Cheer Athletics just has one more competition in the season, the All-Star Extravaganza on April 10-11 in Edmonton. 

They will have a showcase on March 28 at the nationsWEST fieldhouse when each team will showcase the routine they have been doing all year. 

“I’m super excited to have the community there to see exactly what cheer is about. We’ll have information there about our upcoming season and it’ll be a fun time,” said Fauchon. 

The showcase is free to attend and will begin at 10:30 am on March 28.
