Carabins upset top-seeded Thunderbirds in U Sports women’s hockey quarterfinals

ELMIRA — The Montreal Carabins upset the top-seeded UBC Thunderbirds 4-3 in quarterfinal play Friday at the U Sports women’s hockey championship.

Jade Picard and Audrey-Anne Veillette scored in the shootout for the eighth-seeded Carabins. Karine Sandilands was the lone UBC player to beat netminder Maude Desroches in the extra session.

Janelle Mentor, Chloe Duchesneau and Juliette Rolland tallied in regulation for Montreal. Sandilands, Grace Elliott and Jaylyn Morris scored for UBC at the Woolwich Memorial Centre.

Later Friday, the fourth-seeded UNB Reds edged the fifth-seeded Ottawa Gee-Gees 2-1 in another shootout.

Payton Hargreaves and Katelyn Scott scored shootout goals for UNB, while Alex Ferguson was the only Ottawa shooter to beat Reds netminder Cassie McCallum.

UNB’s Lauren Carter scored a short-handed goal and Ottawa’s Alex Ferguson had a power-play marker in regulation. Gee-Gees goalie Clara Genier made 43 saves.

UNB will play Montreal in the semifinal on Saturday night. Concordia meets Guelph in the other semifinal.
