The Manitoba-Saskatchewan Open Championship took place from July 9 to 12 at the Shaw Centre in Saskatoon, bringing together top swimmers from Manitoba, Saskatchewan and beyond, including a pair from the Battlefords. Eleven-year-old Sophie de Montarnal and 12-year-old Claire Meiers both posted personal bests in various events.

“It was heartwarming,” said club head coach Lyne de Montarnal, speaking about the swimmers getting personal bests at a pressure-packed tournament.

“They worked so hard in the last three weeks when all the other swimmers were on summer break, they worked at practices four to five days a week. We were still at the pool putting in the time and then to go there and swim against some of Canada’s best swimmers in the age group.”

Sophie de Montarnal qualified for the finals in every event she competed in. Her highest result came in the 200-metre individual medley, where she placed seventh with a time of 2:57.15.

Sophie de Montarnal full results:

Seventh in girls 200-metre individual medley, 2:57.15

12th in girls 100-metre backstroke, 1:22.03

12th in girls 50-metre butterfly, 34.45

13th in girls 200-metre backstroke, 2:58.81

17th in girls 50-metre freestyle, 32.57

17th in girls 100-metre freestyle, 1:13.37

Meiers reached the finals in five of the six races she competed in and stood out in her finals performances with four top-10 finishes, including two fourth-place finishes.

Her strong suit was backstroke, finishing in the top five in the 50-, 100- and 200-metre races.

Claire Meiers full results:

Fourth in girls 200-metre backstroke, 2:49.00

Fourth in girls 50-metre backstroke, 35.02

Fifth in girls 100-metre backstroke, 1:18.34

Eighth in girls 100-metre butterfly, 1:25.17

16th in girls 50-metre butterfly, 36.22

As the Orcas club continues to grow, Lyne de Montarnal called it “pretty fantastic” to see the results the two swimmers earned and how it shows swimmers in the Battlefords that they can reach that level if they put in the effort.

“It was like a wild dream for me to think that we would have kids that were amazing enough to compete at ManSask and here they are. It gives us that positive outlook for the future, for the club, for these kids, for what they can achieve,” she said.

“It really inspires the other swimmers as well. That’s the one thing about swimming is we compete individually, but they are still very much a team, and they support each other in what they do.”

As the season concludes, the Orcas look forward to enjoying their summer break before the season returns in September. With registration open for the upcoming season, de Montarnal talked about the encouragement swimmers at the club get from each other and the community.

“They get a lot of support, but they deserve it. We’re a close-knit group, very much a family in that we all do support each other. So, it’s really great that they can see their teammates as friends like that supporting each other.”
