North Stars close out the regular season on a high note with 4-1 win over Kindersley

The Battlefords North Stars have clinched the third seed in the SJHL at the very lowest with a 3-1 win over the Kindersley Klippers.  

Kindersley decided to go with affiliate player Jackson Dunn between the pipes, and he was arguably their best player all night. 

In the first period, the North Stars got three power play opportunities, but they weren’t able to capitalize on any of them. They sent 11 shots at Dunn in the first period, and he stopped them all while North Stars goaltender Kaeden Serpa turned away all five shots he faced in the opening frame. 

After one: Tied 0-0 

After leading 3-0 in power plays in the first period, the North Stars took the first couple of infractions in the second. However, they were able to kill off back-to-back penalty kills.

The North Stars finally got on the board first at the 15:27 mark. Owen Nelson found Raiden Zacharias down low, Zacharias one touch passed the puck to Adam Konowalchuk who slid the puck past Dunn. Konowalchuk’s 13th goal of the season broke the ice on the power play to make it 1-0 North Stars. 

They doubled down very quickly. At 16:04, a rebound from an Eric Marks shot popped out in front of the net before Kaleb Dewar got the puck past Dunn. There was a scramble and some confusion in front before the puck found its way in for Dewar’s 14th of the season to double the lead. 

After two: 2-0 North Stars 

Just nine seconds into the frame, Alex Coventry and Jacob Dennis met and centre ice and dropped the gloves before wrestling each other to the ground. 

The Klippers looked to feed off the fight, but it was the North Stars who benefited. 

Kindersley was pressuring shortly after the fight, but Owen Nelson blocked a shot off his foot and was in obvious pain. Nelson was able to stay on the ice for the remainder of his shift and after a puck went off the end board in the Klippers zone, Nelson picked it up and fired it past Dunn to make things 3-0 North Stars at 1:03. 

Once again, Serpa brought a shutout bid into the third period but unfortunately lost it. 

On a defensive breakdown, the puck popped out in front to Russ Demo in front of the net and he fired it past Serpa to cut the lead to 3-1 at 12:07. 

The Klippers pulled the goalie a few minutes later, and Anthony Campbell scored an empty netter for his third goal in two games since returning from his suspension. Campbell’s 22nd of the season made it 4-1 at 18:21 and put a stamp on the win. 

Final score: 4-1 North Stars 

The North Stars will find out who they play in the first round of the playoffs on March 14 depending on the result of the Yorkton Terriers and Melville Millionaires game.  

A Yorkton win would put the North Stars in third place and set them up to play the Melfort Mustangs. A Melville win would mean the North Stars finish in second and have a date with the Millionaires.
