North Stars score three in the third, win wild matchup 5-3 vs Weyburn Red Wings

Dec 7, 2025 | 12:19 AM

In a similar game to the night prior against the Estevan Bruins, the Battlefords North Stars (14-6-2-2, 2nd in Nutrien Division) took down the Weyburn Red Wings (16-7-1-1, 1st in Bunge Division) 5-3 after going into the third period with a lead then weathering the storm in the final frame.

The North Stars got on the board in the first few minutes of the game. On the power play, Anthony Campbell found Finlay Klippenstein out in front to make it 1-0. The tally was Klippenstein’s team leading 12th of the year and 11th in as many games.

North Stars assistant coach Owen Lamb was incredibly pleased with the team getting out to a quick start on the second leg of a triple header with travel. “I love what I’ve seen. I thought our guys were ready right from the drop of the puck. Despite playing yesterday and a long road trip today, our guys came ready and really dictated the pace off the start.”

Early in the second frame, Campbell had a similar pass to Adam Konowalchuk, who one-timed it in from the slot to give the North Stars a 2-0 lead. After allowing two goals in 12 shots, Red Wings goalie Preston Patenaude was pulled from the game. The North Stars took a 2-0 lead into the third period.

Just like the first two periods, the North Stars scored early on in the frame. This time it was courtesy of Kobe Sawyer who took a pass from Owen Nelson and buried it to put the North Stars up 3-0.

The Red Wings got on the board less than two minutes later when Callas Pierce skated across the edge of the crease, went to the backhand and slid it past North Stars goaltender Kaeden Serpa. 31 seconds later, Will Munro grabbed a blocked shot and fired it past Serpa to make it 3-2 with more than 15 minutes left in the third period.

Just over halfway through the period, Carter Geysen took a roughing penalty after a scuffle in front of the Red Wings bench. On a scramble in front, Linken Fisher made a couple of huge blocks in the crease to keep it at 3-2.

Right after that, Geysen got out of the box and was sprung on a breakaway. Geysen went backhand and roofed it to give the North Stars a 4-2 lead.

After Red Wings centre Josh Sale took a penalty later in the third, Weyburn killed it off. Sale was sent on a breakaway right out of the box and like Geysen, scored on the breakaway and cut the lead to one with 1:45 left to go.

However, the North Stars held on for the win after Kaleb Dewar put in an empty netter and they won it 5-3. The win was the North Stars third straight and eighth in ten games.

The North Stars will look to sweep their weekend triple header when they have a rematch with the Red Wings on Sunday for an afternoon contest. The Ultra Print pregame show starts at 2:30 pm Saskatchewan time while Napa Auto Parts North Stars hockey starts at 3:00 pm on CJNB/CJNS.
