"IT MEANS A LOT"

Meals in the Field delivers a taste of appreciation to local farmers

Oct 7, 2026 | 4:55 PM

For Saskatchewan farmers, harvest can mean long hours in the field, often with little time to stop and grab a meal.

On Wednesday, Jodi Woytiuk and her family got to take a break from the combine and enjoy lunch without having to leave the field.

Woytiuk was the first recipient of six Meals in the Field deliveries this harvest season. The meal brought Woytiuk, her husband, their three children and some neighbours together for pizza on their land just east of North Battleford.

“It means a lot to have everyone here to enjoy a meal in the field; we appreciate it!” Woytiuk said.

The family has about 700 acres left to harvest out of the 4,500 acres they farm.

“Hopefully in the next few days, if the rain stays away, we will finish up and that’ll be the end of it and start hauling grain,” she said.

On-air personality Matt Ryan delivered Wednesday’s meal. He said the Meals in the Field contest has been a harvest tradition for as long as he can remember, dating back at least 18 years.

“It’s a good way to pay back the farmers and ranchers for putting food on our table, and to take food to the people that we owe.”

For Ryan, the appeal of the contest is simple: bring a hot meal to the people spending some of the longest days of the year working to put food on the table.

“It’s just a small little token of thanks and gratitude for what they do on a daily basis,” he said.

“A lot of the time they’re out in the middle of nowhere, an hour or so away from their homes. They really only have out there to eat what they brought with them and sometimes it’s not much. So, when they’re out there long days, from sunup to sundown and they get food brought to them actually in the field, they’re very appreciative.”

The Meals in the Field contest will deliver five more meals to farmers and ranchers throughout the harvest season.

People can enter online by signing up, or by listening to Grant Schutte in the morning on 1050 CJNB/CJNS for a cue to call.
