Continuing the Battlefords North Stars player profile series is forward Finlay Klippenstein, who is red-hot right now with a five-game goal streak.

Klippenstein is from British Columbia, having lived in Cowichan Valley, Duncan and Nanaimo. “I’ve kind of got a taste of all the island,” said Klippenstein.

The North Stars forward said that a couple of things that he misses about being at home is the ocean and the mountains. “There’s none of that here, so I’ll probably admire it a lot more when I’m back home.”

While Klippenstein enjoys being around the ocean, he prefers the lake for swimming and boating. He enjoys being out on the lake with his friends and mentioned wakeboarding as an activity he likes. He doesn’t have his boating license but would like to get it.

Being able to ski and snowboard, Klippenstein said he is better at skiing but doesn’t go too often. He went skiing in Calgary with his cousins, which got him into the sport. He hasn’t been to Whistler but would like to. He’s been to Mount Washington and mentioned that as one that he would recommend people go to.

On top of hockey, Klippenstein also played lacrosse and baseball as a kid. “[Lacrosse] was my other main one, which I miss actually. It was a lot of fun,” said Klippenstein.

In his mid-teens, Klippenstein won the provincial championships in lacrosse with the Cowichan Valley Thunder. “It was a different group of friends that I had from hockey, so it was a good experience. I didn’t win much playing hockey, so it was fun to win.”

Having not won too much in hockey, Klippenstein talked about what it would mean for him to win the Canterra Seeds Cup with the North Stars.

“That’d probably be the best experience of my life. Then to be able to go for it next year would be even better. That’d be a dream, to be honest.”

A unique experience that Klippenstein did have the opportunity to do in junior hockey was play with his older brother, Parker. They played together with the Kerry Park Islanders in the 2023-24 season. They even had a chance to play on the same line.

“Playing with him, going to drive into the rink together, it was awesome…combined for a decent amount of points too, so we got to score together.” He had a fun theory on why they had such good chemistry on the ice. “A lot of time on the street playing road hockey and stuff. I guess it translated well.” He said the team called him ‘Jr’ and Parker ‘Sr’.

He has family roots in other sports as well. He mentioned his sister coaching high school basketball in Duncan. Klippenstein has three sisters and two brothers in total.

Klippenstein said that while he likes rap and rock music, he has gotten more into country since moving to Saskatchewan. He talked about seeing various artists in concerts such as Keith Urban, Nickelback, and Blake Shelton.

With December coming up, Klippenstein also said he’s excited for Christmas movies and mentioned his favourite one. “I’d have to go with Elf. I love Will Ferrell, he’s my favourite actor.” While Elf is his favourite Christmas movie, Klippenstein said Step Brothers is his favourite overall movie.

The North Stars forward spoke about how he’s enjoyed his time in the Battlefords.

“First experience here when I got to come out on the ice with all the music and all the fans in the building, that was awesome. Just playing in front of a bunch of people. We don’t get crowds like that in B.C,” said Klippenstein. “Just being around town, I feel like you get respected and stuff, I love it.” Klippenstein even ran into a North Stars fan in Saskatoon recently. “I was pretty surprised myself… it’s a good conversation, so it was pretty cool.”

Leading the team in goals with nine, Klippenstein is on pace for 47 points (28g, 19a) this season.
