The Battlefords North Stars (10-5-2-2, 3rd in Nutrien Division) won their third straight game for the first time this season in a 4-3 win over the Humboldt Broncos (13-7-0-1, 2nd in Nutrien Division. With wins over the Kindersley Klippers, Nipawin Hawks and now Humboldt Broncos, their three consecutive victories came over three top-five teams in the SJHL.

In the first period, Humboldt took the lead first when Logan Flint slid the puck through the five hole of Steele Bass to give the Broncos a 1-0 lead on the powerplay.

The man advantage was strong for both teams early. Just over halfway through the frame, Kobe Sawyer tipped home a Linken Fisher point shot on the power play to tie the game up at one.

The Broncos took a 2-1 lead into the 2nd period after Jacob Strizzi had a shot blocked, Jeter Korte picked it up and fired it past Bass with less than four minutes to go in the frame.

Cole Hines was the lone goalscorer for the North Stars in the second period. With a scramble in front, Hines shot a rebound from the edge of the crease into the empty net before Broncos goalie Nick Kotai could get back into position. Hines’ second goal of the season tied the game up at two.

In the third period, Finlay Klippenstein extended his goal streak to four straight games when he took a pass in tight from Alessio Nardelli and made no mistake to give the North Stars their first lead of the game.

Later on, a debuting Owen Nelson skated across the crease from the corner and waited out Nick Kotai before scoring on a tough angle, putting the North Stars up 4-2.

That goal ended up being crucial for the North Stars. The Broncos pulled their goalie with about three-and-a-half minutes to go and Connor Miller deflected in a Jacob Strizzi pass from the point, cutting the lead to 4-3.

The Broncos couldn’t get more than that, and the North Stars took it 4-3, winning their third straight game. It was the fourth consecutive loss for the Broncos.

Goaltending continued to be a strong suit for the North Stars. Steele Bass stopped 38 of the 41 shots that the Broncos sent his way.

The North Stars and Broncos face off again on Saturday in Humboldt when the North Stars look to win their fourth straight contest and come within a point of the Broncos. Its an earlier start than normal. The Ultra Print Services pregame show will begin at 4:30 pm Saskatchewan time, Napa Auto Parts North Stars hockey begins at 4:00 on CJNB/CJNS.
