Pair of Sharks picked for U18 women’s summer selection camp

Horbach said he told Mucha’s parents the Sharks have seen her talent and work ethic daily, and now the rest of the country may get an opportunity to see it.

“She can move. An intense player that can get control of the play and shut things down early. She’s got an offensive side to her game. She’s also got a lot of grit.”

Horbach also praised Weber, who was named the Sharks’ Rookie of the Year last season.

“She can control the play. Bounce off her and she can go through and make plays. She’s got an elite skill set when it comes to handling the puck and her shot,” he said.

“We talked a little bit about the things that don’t really get noticed on the scoresheet, but are still incredibly valued. Valuable to a team is play away from the puck, and that’s probably been her biggest growth.”

When asked what the players need to do to make the strongest impression, Horbach said they should be themselves and avoid playing too much of an individual game.

“We’ve seen them play a team game, and I think even at that level, it’s just so important. You can’t be individuals. You gotta understand your skill set but play a team game. Then you’ll get noticed, and your side will have success as well.”

With Weber and Mucha believed to be the first ever Sharks invited to the camp, Horbach said the national exposure is important for both the team and the league.

“I think you have coaching that can help you develop and achieve those goals. The grass isn’t always greener elsewhere. I’m hopeful they will understand and see opportunities that exist right in their own backyard there. It speaks volumes as to what you can accomplish at home and in the right environment.”

Weber and Mucha are two of four Saskatchewan players invited to the camp, along with Saskatoon Stars forward Sadie Green and Swift Current Wildcats forward Laynee Rondeau.

The selection camp will run Aug. 4-8 in Richmond, B.C., where Mucha and Weber could move a step closer to wearing the Maple Leaf.
