Pack the Patrol Unit back to support Battleford’s furry friends

It’s that time of the year, when donations can make a difference for the Battleford’s furriest members of the community.

On Dec. 5, the Battlefords Humane Society, Community Safety Officers (CSOs) and the Citizens on Patrol program will be packing patrol units full of donations at four locations: Walmart, No Frills, Pet Value, and Canadian Tire.

A board member with Battlefords Humane Society said the organization hopes to fill all of the vehicles with items the shelter can use to clean the facility or care for animals.

“Food is always good [to donate], especially wet kitten and puppy food. Things like blankets or towels, cat or dog toys, collars or harnesses or leashes…pine pellets for cat litter and cat scratching posts,” said Lindsay Munroe. “And then housekeeping things like laundry detergent, garbage bag, bleach, dryer sheet, things like that.”

In the past, the event has been very successful for the Humane Society. The last couple of years, the patrol units were so full that the organization did not have room to store all of the donated supplies. Munroe said CSOs were able to store the donations for them until items were needed.

“When we do events like pack the patrol unit, we get supplies that we then don’t have to spend our money to buy. That money can then go to whatever we need to help the animals that we care for,” she said.

During the event hours, passersby also have the chance to meet adoptable dogs. This year, the shelter is hoping to find forever homes for several of the dogs who have been at the shelter for a long time – some of them for about a year. The Humane Society said the adoption process can begin on location for those who may be interested.

“Getting our animals out and in the public’s eye is a really good way to get them to a family. It’s really important for us to try and get them out as quickly as possible,” said Munroe.

In the past, supplies received during the Pack the Patrol Unit event have helped to keep shelves stocked for up to six months. While there is no specific goal this year, Munroe hopes they’ll receive a similar amount as previous years.

Donations can be made at any of the four locations during the event from 1 p.m. and 4 p.m.
