Fisher scores twice, Battlefords North Stars take down Warman Wolverines 5-2 at home
It was a back-and-forth game at the Access Communications Centre in North Battleford between the North Stars and the Wolverines. Prior to the game, it was looking like the Stars would be facing Wolverines goalie Griffin Wright, who has a .944 save % and 2.02 goals against average (GAA) through Warman’s first two games of the season. However, Wright was pulled from the starting spot last minute due to illness and the North Stars got Eric Kahl instead. In net for the North Stars was Connor Baumbach making his season debut.
Kahl played solid for the Wolverines but in the first period, the red-hot Gavin Granger had some luck involved when an Anthony Campbell pass went off his skate and through Kahl’s five hole to make it 1-0 North Stars. The Stars penalty troubles continued in the first period going to the box three times, but they were able to kill off each penalty and went into the second period with the one goal lead.
Less than five minutes into the second period, Kobe Sawyer had the puck on the right side of the net with Linken Fisher wide open in front. Sawyer found his teammate; Fisher took his time and shot it into the yawning cage to make it a 2-0 game. That’s the only goal that either team got in the second and it was 2-0 North Stars heading into the third.
Like last game against Kindersley, the third period was the most eventful. Unlike that game, it wasn’t with fights but with goals. Early in the frame, Ethan Dundas took a pass across the net from Cam Sarna and put it top shelf to make it 2-1, ending Baumbach’s shutout bid. Later, the Stars went to the power play, and it was Linken Fisher who walked in on the right side of the slot, did a subtle sidestep and ripped the puck just past the blocker of Kahl. It was Fisher’s second goal of the game to regain the two-goal lead at 3-2.
