Former RCMP officer known for giving now accused of taking

A former RCMP officer charged in connection to a $16,000 theft from a charity has a history of giving in northern Saskatchewan.

In November of 2017, Jason St. Pierre was a corporal in the Assiniboia detachment when he helped deliver more than $40,000 worth of hockey gear to northern communities including Pelican Narrows and Sandy Bay.

At the time, St. Pierre, who organized similar donations in the past, was quoted in a paNOW news article saying, “I’ve always been involved in the communities that I’ve policed in. I think just knowing the people, and my kids played hockey, it just made it easier to donate that equipment.”

Now, St. Pierre is facing a criminal charge in connection to a different fundraising campaign. In a news release issued Wednesday, the RCMP said St. Pierre led an initiative to raise funds for a community charity in December 2015. In January 2017, the bank account for the charity was found to be empty and the account closed.

During a Code of Conduct review — an internal RCMP investigation for serving members — St. Pierre was suspended from the Assiniboia RCMP with pay. Prior to the review’s conclusion, St. Pierre resigned from the RCMP in June 2018.

A criminal charge for breach of trust was laid against the 42-year-old on May 22.

St. Pierre is scheduled to appear in Assiniboia Provincial Court on Aug. 8.
