NBCHS set to host regionals over the weekend

The North Battleford Comprehensive High School Vikings senior boys basketball team will see nine teams come to town this weekend as they host the 5A regional basketball championship.

After finishing the season with a 17-14 overall record, the Vikings were granted a third overall ranking going into the weekend. Vikings head coach, Ryley Woiden said the team is looking forward to the tournament, especially with a chance at HOOPLA on the line.

“We’re excited because we haven’t hosted in a really long time and last year we won the region. We’re ranked number three this year heading into it, but we need to finish top two if we want to make Hoopla, so we’re feeling confident,” he said.

Woiden added that the team has fared well against some of the other teams in the competition, but still isn’t thinking too far ahead.

“We’ve actually beaten the team that got seeded #2 a couple of times this season, so we feel confident with that matchup, but we need to get through the opener on Friday first,” Woiden said.

Being able to play at home will be a good advantage for the Vikings but Woiden stated that the biggest aspect of the team’s play this weekend will be working hard and defense.

“Playing at home will definitely be an advantage and just sleeping in our own beds and being around family, but for us the biggest thing is we want to really control our tempo and play with speed. We got a really good game plan defensively for the teams that we’re going to play this, so if we work hard everything else takes care of itself,” said Woiden.

5A regional tournament schedule (SHSAA/Website).

The first game of the tournament is Friday, March 14 at NBCHS between Lloydminster and Estevan at 11:15 a.m. with the Vikings first game at 4:30 p.m. against Weyburn on the same day.

Admission for the games is $5.00 for students and $7.00 for adults.
