Glow disc golf a go from N.B. city council

There is an evening of glow disc golf coming soon to the Battlefords, as councillors recently gave the event the seal of approval.

The Saskatchewan High School Athletic Association is having its annual general meeting in North Battleford on June 20.

In conjunction with the event, the Battlefords’ Disc Golf Club, in cooperation with Saskatchewan Disc Golf, will be having a game. However, rather than just an ordinary game of disc golf, it will be glow disc golf played in the evening with glow in the dark discs.

“It sounds like fun,” North Battleford Mayor Ryan Bater said. “Disc golf is a growing sport and we have a very well-organized Disc Golf Club here in the Battlefords with strong ties to the provincial association.”

The mayor said the local Disc Golf Club has also recently opened a new course at Battlefords Provincial Park. Bater said the city’s continued growth of the sport has led the community to become “a bit of a destination for disc golfers.”

The park course adds to already three other disc golf locales within the Battlefords community, with courses established at Fort Battleford National Historic Site, Jackfish, and Centennial Park — which will be the spot for the upcoming event.

Because the game held June 20 will be played after dark and should continue after permitted noise hours according to a bylaw, the Battlefords Disc Golf Club secured permission from council to violate the bylaw.

“We’re not expecting a lot of noise,” Bater said. “They’re not playing music, there’s no amplified sound, it’s just voices; but there could be up to 200 people in Centennial Park. We’ll make sure the city is aware [the event] is happening, and we’ll make sure our community safety officers are aware, and the RCMP as well, just to make sure everyone knows there are going to be 200 people in Centennial Park on June 20.”

The event will run June 20 from 10 p.m. to midnight at Centennial Park.
